It's kind of raining

IMG_0386[1]

I know it seems odd to see a picture of feet on a blog about daily pictures of a city but I felt that these captured Downey to a T. It rained today. Since it only rains about 7 times a year, the entire city went into havoc and dug out their Uggs and other irrational rain gear and ventured out into the open.

(By the way, as I'm typing this, my neighbor's sprinklers came on. Kind of ironic on a night like this.)

My answer to this day was to put on half of a rain boot and do my errands without still getting any rain on my feet.

Big boots to fill

IMG_7756

Today Downey Fire Fighters were taking it to the streets. It was the annual "fill the boot" fundraiser. The firemen spent their day at the intersection of Firestone and Lakewood. They walked out into traffic with their boots held high. Their goal was to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy.

In an interview with the Downey Patriot, fire engineer Peter Browne explained that "Downey is home to one of the nation's leading muscular dystrophy rehabilitation centers, Rancho Los Amigos, so it stands to reason that we support this cause in our very own backyard."

Funds that are raised are used to send local kids to camp as well as fund research for the MDA. Last year this same fundraiser brought in $19,300 in a single day! I'm guessing the boots were more than half-full.

Thank you Downey Fire Fighters for all your hard work!

Santa Woody

IMG_0257

Woody goes Santa!

Ever since meeting Woody earlier this year, I find myself going out of my way periodically to to see how he is doing. I did not realize that he might get a change of clothing for Christmas. Not only did Woody get a Santa suit, he got some real cowboy boots! I wonder if any kids wander up on the front porch to whisper their Christmas wish lists in his ear. He even has the Santa "wave" down pat.

You may remember Woody from a previous post in April.
