Neighborhood watch

Tonight my neighbors and I participated in our third and final community meeting to qualify as Downey's Neighborhood Watch #154. This meeting featured Diana Carbajal, the Emergency Preparedness Council chair for district 4, instructing us on how to be prepared for the emergencies that could hit our neighborhood at any moment.

The handouts were full of helpful information and tips.

The meeting was well attended by my neighbors. I am truly blessed to have such caring neighbors.

Neighbors
While riding with my wife this evening near our home, we passed these men in their front yards. It reminded me that friendly neighborhoods were one of the major reasons we moved to Downey 27 years ago.
This is Paul and Ronnie having a friendly chat while watering their lawns. I'm sure they each could have put out a sprinkler, but instead they took advantage of a warm spring evening to catch up with each other and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
How do you enjoy your neighbors?
The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor.

Good neighbors
Every city has people coming and going and Downey is no different. My long-time neighbors recently moved away. The husband and I would ride our bikes together each morning before work and talk about life along the way. Now I have new neighbors and I wonder what the future holds, I wonder what kind of neighbors they will be? This bench is probably for their young son. It's a little small for the dad.
As I was writing this though, I thought the real question for me is, "what kind of neighbor will I be?"
