Power towers

I did not make it out to take a picture today, so I dipped into a picture I took last year for today's post. It's not a compelling picture (although, I liked that it was close to sunset, I always love the colors). I just thought it was interesting to see the vast number of "power towers" we have in this area of Downey. It makes me wonder how exactly they work. I am thankful for the power they provide.

Power lines

Hundreds of overhead power lines stretch along the side of the Rio Hondo riverbed. Looking at them, you get a sense of what it takes to generate the power we consume on a daily basis.

According to Wikipedia, power lines date back to the late 1800s. I wonder why this process has not gone through some kind of paradigm shift. I know there have been refinements and improvements, but I wonder if some company out there is close to some kind of wireless energy.

Lines, angles, and rhymes

The lyrics of the old Fifth Dimension song, "Love's Lines Angles and Rhymes" come to mind when I look up at these electrical towers at Wilderness Park. There are so many variations of lines, angles, and repetitions (rhymes?) to make them interesting.

Electricity and shade

This USBank, formerly Downey Savings, is just 5 minutes up the road from my home, so I pass by it all the time. I noticed these girders being put up the other day but I couldn't figure out what they were for. Since the top ones are slanted they certainly were not adding more floor space for the bank.

I stopped by today and found out they have a dual purpose. First, they are for the placement of solar panels that will supply electricity for the bank and second, they are strategically placed over the bank's parking lot and will supply shade for the bank's customers.

I especially appreciate how the bank has kept the beautiful pine trees that dot their property.
