The last in my series of middle schools in Downey is Griffiths Middle School, which was originally named North Middle School. I've been looking for websites with information about the name change but couldn't find anything. The school's web site is here.
As you can see from the marquee above, school is out for the summer. The bleachers are empty.
Hey ask Joanne Welch, she knows how the name was changed. Mr. Griffiths was the principal of North. In September after school started he was driving at Lake Elsinore, had a massive heart attack. By June and promotion they changed the name of the school. Joanne Welch was in the first graduating class. It happened in 1967. We were the North Indians.
